Varicose Veins Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, bulging, and bluish veins. They can develop anywhere in your body, but this condition most often affects the legs.

Although not usually a serious medical problem, varicose veins can be unsightly. They may also lead to complications like deep vein thrombosis and skin ulcers. The highly skilled team at Premier Vein & Vascular evaluates varicose veins and provides personalized treatment to prevent complications and improve the appearance of your skin.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a result of weak or damaged blood vessels. Veins have one-way valves that help return blood from your limbs to your heart. When the walls or valves in a vein become weak or damaged, blood may leak backward and pool in the vein. This causes the vein to grow larger and twist.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?

The main symptom of varicose veins is the presence of enlarged, twisted, bluish, or dark purple veins, especially in your legs. Other signs and symptoms may include:

  • Aching pain or heaviness in the legs
  • Changes in skin color
  • Nighttime leg cramps
  • Tenderness or swelling

Symptoms may worsen when you sit or stand for long periods and improve when you lie down or elevate your feet.

How are varicose veins treated?

First, your Premier Vein & Vascular provider carefully evaluates your varicose veins and performs a physical exam. They may perform an ultrasound to check for blood clots.

Then, they recommend the best approach to treatment for your specific needs. This may include one of the following in-office procedures:

Venous ablation
Venous ablation involves getting rid of the problematic blood vessel. Premier Vein & Vascular offers a variety of ablation procedures, including endovascular laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and the VenaSealâ„¢ closure system.

All of these procedures involve inserting a fine tube (catheter) into your vein to deliver a specific form of treatment, such as laser energy.

Sclerotherapy
Considered the gold-standard treatment for small varicose veins, sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution that causes the vein to collapse.

Microphlebectomy
Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves removing a medium or large varicose vein through a small incision.

Your Premier Vein & Vascular provider may also recommend wearing compression stockings or increasing exercise to improve the health of your veins.
